Jesus

May 29, 2016   Hebrews 1   Jesus

What is in a name?  Are names important?  Names give us all kinds of thoughts and emotions.  Store names have different meanings to us.   Think of Lechmere and Montgomery Wards which are out of business and Sears.  Lets go back a few years.    The year was 1809 and the world was in an upheaval.  Napoleon was sweeping through Austria and soldiers from many countries were dying on the battlefield.  The fate of entire kingdoms and nations hung in the balance and the world seemed on the very edge of collapse.   It was 1809...And in that same year several significant people were born.    In Britain, there was William Gladstone - destined to become one of England’s finest statesmen and Alfred Lord Tennyson, one of the great authors of his day, was born to an obscure preacher.

In the US - Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.   Not far away in Boston, Edgar Allen Poe began his life.   It was also in that same year the wife of a physician named Darwin gave birth to their child and named him Charles Robert.   And that same year produced the cries of a newborn infant in a rugged cabin in Kentucky.  The baby’s name was Abraham Lincoln.  But every body’s eyes were upon Europe.   I suspect that those that were living in 1809 were thinking the destiny of the world is being shaped on an Austrian battlefield today.  But history was being made with the birth of babies in England and America.  People were not thinking about a rugged cabin in Kentucky.

Names are important and they bring up all kinds of feelings in us. Names define people.  A person’s name has meaning.   The name of Hitler brings many memories to us.  I suppose in the early 40’s he was the center of much thought.  He created quite an army and battle strategy.  Patton and Rommel were key generals in WWII.    Not much thought given to another man in America that had quite influence in the war J.W. Oppenheimer the father of the atomic bomb which ended the war.  This is memorial week end and we remember our fallen ones.   We put quite an emphasis on names.  One of the sweetest names that we hear is our own name.  When we hear the name of our loved ones it brings emotions to us.  The name of our spouse and our child are important names for us.

Names are important to God even the name of Hitler.  God knows our name.  God knows your name.  God has you in his heart.  God’s children’s names are important to Him.  His eye is upon his children.  God had a lot to say about Jesus in fact the whole bible points to Jesus.  When Jesus was baptized God said this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.    There is a name that is above every name and that name is Jesus.   Philippians 2 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  Jesus created all things and Jesus died on the cross to redeem man to reconcile man to God.

. In the beginning of Isaiah he prophesied that Judah and Jerusalem would fall.  Things were not good but God promised a baby.    That baby was to come 100’s of years later.  In Isaiah 9 we read for to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.    And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.    Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.   He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.   The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.  In Hebrews 1 but about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

This is a precious child.  There is real power in this child and son.  There is power to change people.  Those that are in Christ are new creatures.  There is power to break vices.  There is power to restore families.   At the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord.  I was talking with my mail man a couple of weeks ago and told him that a few days ago which was May 12th a grown black bear went by my neighbors fence and crossed by my place.  The mailman said if you ever encounter a bear in the wild just bark like a dog because bears do not like dogs.  I told him that I had read that people had stopped wild animals by using the name of Jesus.  It is good to get out the name of Jesus.  There is power in the name of Jesus.  In Acts 3 Peter tells the crippled man at the gate of beautiful that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth walk.  When questioned by the leaders by whose name and authority was he healed Peter tells them that he was healed in the name of Jesus Christ who they crucified.

In Hebrews 1 God speaks that Jesus created the world.  I spoke with a young man a week ago and asked him if he had prayed about his illness and he said he prayed to the universe for healing and I told him better to pray to the one who created the universe.  The power is no in the ground or the trees to heal but the creator.  It is amazing that people believe they can pray to the universe and get an answer.  I have prayed that young man gets a better handle on things.  Here is power in this name the name of Jesus.  Jesus created the world and will be around and in control when the world is destroyed by fire.  There is power over sin there is power over death and there is power over Satan.  There is power to heal and power to forgive.   There is power in us in the Holy Spirit.

The song writer wrote there is power, power, wonder working power in the blood of the lamb. We have forgiveness in the name of Jesus.   We have forgiveness through Jesus blood and sacrifice.   Salvation is not free.  We can accept it without paying for it but it cost a great deal.  It cost God a great deal and it cost Jesus a great deal.  Jesus learned obedience by the things which he suffered.  Jesus went out in the wilderness and was tempted by the devil after fasting for 40 days.   He felt power go out of him when people were healed.  Jesus took all of our sin and our infirmities on the cross. God’s wrath was poured out on Jesus on the cross.  Forgiveness is such a gift.  If we have Jesus we have life, eternal life.  Jesus in us is the hope of glory.

In John 8 Jesus is teaching the people at the Mount of Olives and the leaders bring a woman caught in adultery.  Teacher this woman was caught in adultery and the Law of Moses commanded that she be stoned to death.  Can you imagine the pain and the feeling that this woman experienced?  The crowd is around.  The leaders want to shame Jesus.   Is Jesus the friend of sinners?  The leaders figured that it was impossible for Jesus to come out of this test.  They figure that there is no way that Jesus can win.   Here are the leaders saying stone her, stone this wicked woman.  Moses told us to do it.  There is no small amount of pain here folks.  Have you ever been shamed before?

I just tread this week the Muslins in Egypt took the mother of a Christian who was sleeping with a Muslin woman and they beat his mother and stripped her of all of her clothes and 300 people paraded her on the streets and burned Christian places.  The police are arresting some of them.  If you are interested in some other news there is a video in U tube that NBC says in 2017 we will all have a RFID chip.  One store in Chicago the people are paying with their finger print.  I believe we are so close to some huge changes.  Any way think of this poor woman who was dragged before Jesus.  She may die.   She is humiliated.  Then think about this poor woman in Egypt.   She did not know if she would live.  Tough to stand naked before 300 rioters probably all men and then put on display.  She was scared to death.  That is pretty traumatic.  What do you think it will be like for some to stand before a holy God and all the angles and people of the world and the person had chances to receive Jesus and instead they mocked Jesus and took his name in vain.  What will it be like to stand before a holy God?   It is better to be on His side than against him on judgment day.  It is better to be his friend than his enemy.  Sin will not be popular on judgment day.  Same sex marriages and abortions will not be in then.  It is best to have it forgiven.   No one is going to argue how innocent they are.

Jesus took my sin.  I am undone and Jesus took that.  Jesus took all of my unrighteousness.  He took the ugliness out of me.  He cleansed me and I can stand holy before God and Jesus.  Jesus took the trash and put his goodness in me.  Jesus took my shame and a lot of my pain.   Jesus took the stain out.  I am washed in the blood.  Jesus is known as the friend of sinners.  What a wonderful savior.  He is Emmanuel God with us.  He told the men that brought the woman caught in adultery that those without sin could cast the first stone.  Their critical judgmental spirit went away.   Jesus was without sin and he did not condemn her.   We tend to condemn and judge.  Each one of us will have enough to answer for at judgment day.   What is life without Jesus like?

Have you heard the story about a fellow who wore a very painful pair of shoes? He complained to everybody about them, saying, "These shoes really hurt my feet. They’re awful," he would say.  His coworkers got tired of listening to that, so one of them suggested that he just buy a new pair of shoes. The guy answered, "Well, believe me, I’ve thought about it, but I’ve decided not to."   "You see, I hate my job. Every day I come to work, punch in & then spend 8 hours of drudgery. I hate every minute of it. Then I go home, & at home I have a wife who is never satisfied. She nags me day & night. All the time it is just nag, nag, nag."  "Then not long ago, my daughter & her husband moved in with us, & they have two of the most obnoxious kids you’ve ever seen. They run wild all over the place, destroying the furniture, tearing up the house."  "On top of that, my mother-in-law is living with us, too. And every night she grabs the remote control, sits down in my favorite chair, & I have to watch the TV programs she wants to watch."  He said, "I tell you, with all these problems in my life, the only real pleasure I have is in taking off these shoes."  Jesus said you will not come to me to have life.

Jesus is wonderful and loving.  He is pure love.  He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  He is the lily of the valley and the bright and morning star.  He is savior.  He is our friend.  He is the way the truth and the life.  He gives peace.  He is in control and Jesus reigns.  He desires a relationship with you.  He desires your time.  He is more precious than gold yea lots of gold.  I hope you see him like that today.  God said man shall not live by bread alone.  Jesus said I have come that you may have life and have life more abundantly or full.
