December 23, 2012      Luke 2    Jesus

Who is this one whom millions love and worship?  Who is this one that prophets spoke about thousands of years ago?   Who is this one that God and angels have announced?   Who is this one that is the hope of the world?   Who is this one that people have wanted to see and learn about hundreds even thousands of years before he came?   Who is this one that people have worshipped for thousands of years?   Who is this one that we have come to pay tribute to today?     Who is this one that children speak of and what do they have to say?

These are some children’s comments about what they had learned from the bible.   They did not get everything exactly correct.  The children in a church wrote: After the Old Testament came the New Testament.   Jesus is the star of the New Testament.   He was born in Bethlehem in a barn.    (I wish I had been born in a barn, too, because my mom is always saying to me, 'Close the door! Were you born in a barn' It would be nice to say, 'As a matter of fact, I was.')   During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Republicans.   Jesus also had twelve opossums.   The worst one was Judas Asparagus.    Judas was so evil that they named a terrible vegetable after him.   Jesus was a great man. He healed many leopards and even preached to some Germans on the Mount.    But the Republicans and all those guys put Jesus on trial before Pontius the Pilot.    Pilot didn't stick up for Jesus.   He just washed his hands instead. Anyways, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again.    He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum.   His return is foretold in the book of Revolution.  Well they got Jesus dying for our sins and his resurrection correct and yes he is coming back.

What does the bible say about him before he came?    What did Isaiah say about him over 600 years before Jesus was born?  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.   Immanuel means God with us.  The people walking in darkness have seen a great light on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.    For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.   And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.    Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.   The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Isaiah continues "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.     He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.  A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.   In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.  In his law the islands will put their hope."    He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground.   He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.   He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.   Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.   Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.    But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.    We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.   He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Who is this person that we celebrate this time of year?   Well I would say that he is the lily of the valley and far more beautiful that any lily or valley.  He is the bright and morning star.   Jesus is the center of the God’s holy word.   Jesus is the creator because all things were made by him.  He is the alpha and omega though he always was and always will be.   He is the eternal God.   He is the friend of sinners.   He is the friend of those that call upon him.   He is the hope of the ages.   He is our hope of glory.   He is our hope of eternal life.  He also is the hope of the nations.    Jesus is full of grace, mercy and truth.   He is the light of the world.   He is the savior of my soul.  He is my king and my God.   He is the lover of my soul.   He is the mighty God.   He is sovereign and he rules over all.   He has created all.   He is our healer.  By his stripes we are healed.  He is the one that knows the path though this wilderness that men live in.   He knows the future.   He knows all things.   Jesus never learns anything.   He never lacks anything.  My Lord Jesus is never surprised by anything and never caught off guard.   My Jesus has never made a mistake and never sinned.   He is the epitome of perfection.   He is holy, holy, holy.   He is the good shepherd.   He laid down his life for us.   Greater love has no one than to lay down his life.   He is majestic.   He is full of glory.   He shines brighter than the sun.   He is the bread of life.   He is the way, the truth and the life.   He is the only way to the father.  He is the only way to heaven.

Jesus proved himself as the God man.   He was triumphant over death.  He is the first born from the dead.    He was triumphant over sin.   He was triumphant over Satan.   He always walked in victory.  He always walked in God’s power.   He healed the lepers.  He healed all manner of sickness and deformity.   He spoke and raised the dead.   Nature obeyed him and he calmed the storm by speaking to it.  He sent the demons packing by the word of his mouth thereby setting men and women free from Satan’s power.  Though he never wrote a book thousands of books have been written about him.   Though he never led an army he has changed the world more than all the armies that ever marched.   His love wins the hearts of men and people all over the world.   He has followers all over the world through the ages.  He stood on this earth as a man head and shoulders above all others.

He has promised us eternal life.  He is life and He gives us life.   He has promised us to answer our prayers.   He has promised us his presence.   He gives grace and mercy to those that ask.   To those that ask seek and knock he promises answers.  He is majestic and the song writer said worship his majesty.   He is worthy of all we have.   He is worthy of every thought of your life.   He is worthy of your tithe.   For those that give to him he promises a hundred fold plus eternal life.   Jesus is the one who turned water into wine.   Jesus is the one who feeds thousands with a couple of loaves of bread.   Jesus is the true vine.  He is the one born of a virgin.  He is the one that the angels announced his coming to the shepherds.   He is the one who fulfilled the prophecies written hundreds of years before he was born.   He is the king of preachers and he is the center of the preacher’s message today.  He is the one who calls the preacher today.    He is the one who calls men today to God and he calls men from sin.

He is the greatest because he served all mankind.   He poured out his soul unto death.   He interceded for sinners.   He died for sinners.   He died for the lost.   He is the one who was despised, hated and yet loved, crucified and then raised from the dead.   He is the one whom God said this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.   He is perfect in every way.  He is preparing a place for us and will come again to get us.   He is praying for us.  We are joint heirs with him.  The Christian will be like him.   He is the creator and he holds all things together by his power.  He made all things.  He made you and you belong to him.   Our debt to him can never be repaid.   He is worthy of every thought you will ever think and every penny you will ever make and all of your resources and all of your life.  He is worthy of your worship.  He is the chief corner stone and every knee will bow to him someday and every tongue will confess him some day.  He came into this world as a baby but will come back as the mighty God in power to rule and control and reign.   The song writer said this, this is Christ the King whom shepherds watch and angels sing.

Dr. S.M. Lockridge was the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, San Diego CA from 1953 - 1993. He entered heaven in 2000. He is well-known for a passage out of his sermon titled “He’s My King”:       “He’s enduringly strong, He’s entirely sincere, He’s eternally steadfast.     He’s immortally graceful.     He’s imperially powerful.     He’s impartially merciful. He’s God’s Son.    He’s a sinner’s savior.    He’s the centerpiece of civilization.    He stands alone in Himself.    He’s unparalleled.    He’s unprecedented.   He’s supreme.    He’s preeminent.   He’s the loftiest idea in literature.   He’s the highest idea in philosophy.   He’s the fundamental truth in theology.    He’s the miracle of the age.   He’s the only one able to supply all of our needs simultaneously.    He supplies strength for the weak.   He’s available for the tempted and the tried.   He sympathizes and He saves.    He guards and He guides.    He heals the sick, He cleans the lepers.    He forgives sinners, He discharges debtors, He delivers captives, He defends the feeble, He blesses the young, He serves the unfortunate, He regards the aged, He rewards the diligent, He beautifies the meek.    Do you know Him?

Well, my king is the king of knowledge, He’s the well-spring of wisdom, He’s the doorway of deliverance, He’s the pathway of peace, He’s the roadway of righteousness, He’s the highway of holiness, He’s the gateway of glory, He’s the master of the mighty, He’s the captain of the conquerors, He’s the head of the heroes, He’s the leader of the legislators, He’s the overseer of the overcomers, He’s the governor of governors, He’s the prince of princes, He’s the king of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

His life is matchless.   His goodness is limitless.   His mercy is everlasting.   His love never changes.  His word is enough.   His grace is sufficient.    His reign is righteous.   His yoke is easy and His burden is light.   Well. I wish I could describe Him to you but He’s indescribable.   Yes.  He’s incomprehensible.   He’s invincible, He’s irresistible.   I’m trying to tell you, the Heavens cannot contain Him, let alone a man explain Him.   You can’t get Him out of your mind.  You can’t get Him off of your hands.  You can’t outlive Him, and you can’t live without Him.
